There are a number of exotic fruit flies which pose a risk to Australia and so when importing fruit and vegetables into Australia we must be mindful of managing this risk.

If species such as the fruit fly, melon fly, Mexican fruit fly, and Natal fruit fly were to spread across Australia, our horticultural industry would be devastated—which is why the Australian government’s investment in fruit fly defence is so important.

The BICON (Australian Biosecurity Import Conditions) website has the technical phytosanitary requirements which must be met prior to importation.

For general information on the imports process and requirements which must be met please refer to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website.
