Plant Health Australia (PHA) and the National Fruit Fly Council (NFFC) have completed the first two regional workshops designed to help inform the next National Fruit Fly Strategy (NFFS) and support a national economic analysis of fruit fly impacts.

The workshops, held on the Gold Coast on Friday 31 July and in Mildura on Tuesday 11 August, brought together growers, industry representatives, researchers and government stakeholders to explore current fruit fly challenges and future priorities.

Participants considered the costs currently experienced by industry, how fruit fly risks and impacts may change in the future, and the role that research, development, extension (RD&E) and government support can play in managing those challenges. Discussions also explored priorities for future investment and areas to consider in the next Strategy.

A third workshop will be held online on Thursday 3 September 2026, giving stakeholders another opportunity to contribute to the development of the next NFFS.

Information gathered through the workshops will contribute to the economic analysis project being delivered by PHA and the Centre for International Economics, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

The NFFS is expected to be completed in December 2026.
