National Fruit Fly Strategic Review update
Planning for the next iteration of Australia’s National Fruit Fly Strategy has commenced with the identification of four strategic discussion themes for industry input and consultation.
The four themes, that will help guide the development of the 2026–35 National Fruit Fly Strategy, include:
- Prevent and prepare for the entry and establishment of fruit flies (exotic, established, and endemic) in current pest-free areas.
- Minimise impacts of established and endemic fruit flies on commercial and recreational horticulture through regional coordination, collective action, and capability building.
- Improve trade systems by implementing national systems that support market access and development.
- Strengthen collaboration between industry, government, and regional partners to ensure ongoing national protection against fruit fly impacts.
A consultation plan is being developed to engage further with various industry groups through targeted workshops, webinars, and expert panels. The process will also integrate findings from an Economic Analysis of Fruit Fly Impacts in Australia being run concurrently.
Key stages that will feature in the review process include:
- Contract and launch
- Baseline assessment of current costs by industry and region
- Analysis of future drivers and trends
- Evaluation of potential impacts and response strategies
- Drafting of the National Fruit Fly Strategy 2026–35
- Implementation of the new strategy.
Economic framework update
Plant Health Australia is in the final stages of contracting the Centre for International Economics (CIE) to conduct the economic analysis.
