Fruit fly workshop with NSW Local Land Service
The NFFC attended a fruit fly workshop hosted by the Greater Sydney Local Land Service (LLS) at the Somersby NSW DPI Research Station in the latter half of 2023.
Presented by Senior Land Services Officer Kim Whelan, and the highly experienced fruit fly entomologist Andrew Jessup, the workshop covered a range of topics such as types of fruit fly, identification, susceptible hosts fruits, monitoring, and control techniques.
Andrew stressed the importance of year-round planning for fruit fly management and the need for early intervention at the start of the season to limit the build-up and pressure of fruit fly numbers later in the season. He also highlighted the need to manage non-crop hosts around your property such as a backyard lemon trees, as these can be a reservoir for reinfestation.
