Who’s who in fruit fly: Dr Patsavee Utaipanon
With a background in entomology and experience across biosecurity research and emergency response, Dr Patsavee Utaipanon brings a strong technical and research perspective to the NFFC.
In this profile, Patsavee shares her experience working across biosecurity and her focus on supporting research, development and extension for Australia’s horticultural industries.
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your education and career.
Hi. I’m Patsavee, and I’ve recently joined the National Fruit Fly Council (NFFC). My educational background centres around entomology, population genetics focusing on bees. My previous work experience includes research insect vector control, Australian bee populations, insect pollination, and protected cropping.
Before joining Hort Innovation, I worked in a wild bee management program as part of the varroa mite emergency response.
Where do you currently work and what is your role?
I currently working at Hort Innovation as the Research and Development Manager (Biosecurity).
What does a typical day at the office look like for you?
No two days are alike for me. My work includes identifying and developing RD&E investment opportunities, engaging with growers and researchers to understand their priorities and concerns, and reviewing ongoing projects to provide feedback and ensure they are delivering value.
How does your role relate to biosecurity and, more specifically, fruit fly?
In my role, I manage R&D investment supported by grower levies and government contributions, focused on strengthening biosecurity outcomes across horticultural industries.
This includes supporting research, development, and extension activities to help growers manage key threats, with fruit fly being a significant issue across many industries.
What motivates you to continue doing the work you do?
I am motivated by seeing research translate into tangible outcomes that make a difference for growers and industry.
What are you most proud of in the work you do?
Knowing that I am contributing to Australian horticulture by supporting our growers and protecting our crops.
