Managing fruit fly in Australian horticulture is challenging enough. Recent regulatory actions impacting the use of insecticides has made it even more complicated.

A study by Kevin Bodnaruk, an expert in the area of pesticide regulation and risk assessment, provides important insight into the mounting domestic and international regulatory pressures on insecticides currently approved for use in Australia to manage fruit fly.

It was found that several insecticides used for in-crop fruit fly management at the farmer and state quarantine level are at risk from regulatory pressures in the next three to five years.

These impacts could affect key export markets directly or indirectly, such as loss of authorisation or through relevant trade facilitating standards.
