It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of world-renowned horticulture market access researcher Peter Leach.

For more than three decades, Peter’s research on fruit fly disinfestation, phytosanitary treatments and irradiation supported practical protocols that expanded domestic and international market access for Australian horticulture.

Peter was instrumental in establishing the Fresh and Secure Trade Alliance (FASTA) as a recognised collaboration between industry, government and researchers. His leadership delivered practical outcomes and a lasting legacy for Australian horticulture.

Internationally, Peter served on the FAO Technical Panel on Phytosanitary Treatments and chaired the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Phytosanitary Measures Research Group, helping shape global plant health and market access approaches. He was named Bayer Researcher of the Year at the 2022 Australian Horticulture Awards.

Known for his generosity, collegiality and mentorship, Peter freely shared his knowledge and inspired colleagues across research, industry and government.

His passing is a profound loss to Australian horticulture and the wider research community.

On behalf of the National Fruit Fly Council, and Plant Health Australia, we extend our sincere condolences to Peter’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
